Little Barton Cottage
Little Barton Farmhouse is a large Victorian family house with most of its original features and you find Little Barton Cottage in the courtyard of the farm buildings. Set in the Hartland Peninsula, in an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, with magnificent views of the Bristol Channel and Lundy Island on one side and the Atlantic on the other, the farmhouse and cottage are set in a walkers’ paradise with the South West Coast Path a short walk away, as well as a network of inland paths. The surroundings support a wide variety of wildlife like foxes, badgers, dragonflies, hawks and lots of seabirds. Wild flowers are in abundance everywhere.
The farmhouse sleeps ten persons in six bedrooms with possibly one additional room. It has two bathrooms, a sitting room and a big, well equipped kitchen. The cottage sleeps six persons in three bedrooms. In its own small garden, the cottage is a sympathetic conversion of an old stone and slate farm building. It has wooden and terracotta floors with big and light rooms. The houses can be rented separately, or together. (The farmhouse has a table which can seat up to 16). Both houses are run on organic principles with their own water supply and no smoking is allowed inside the buildings. Organic catering can be arranged. Together, the houses work well as a venue for courses.
The Hartland Peninsula is a wonderful place for walks, with a landscape full of contrasts. Little Barton is only a few minutes walk from the South West Coast Path. The local beaches are excellent for swimming and surfing. Speke’s Mill Mouth, the nearest beach, (3 km walk) is set in Natural Trust land and is peaceful and secluded even in the height of summer. For cycling enthusiasts the Tarka Trail is a safe cycle route, running from Barnstaple to Torrington. You can also hire a boat and go out to Lundy to dive, fish or just swim with the dolphins. Hartland has very good food shops supplying a wide range of locally sourced food. Every first Sunday of the month there is a Farmer’s Market in the Parish Hall.
