Hemp Cottage
This sustainable and carefully constructed cottage is located right beside a river in the grounds of the converted mill of Rachel and Tom. They are architects and build this house from locally sourced FSC-timber and natural insulation materials, such as hemp and lime for the walls and with a grass roof. The house was in several magazines! It offers you a healthy and relaxing place for your holiday.
The cottage is suitable for four to five persons. It’s generous and has lots of natural light. It has a living room, a modern kitchen, one bedroom with a double-bed and one bedroom with a bunk-bed. Due to the underfloor heating and the high levels of insulation it is a very comfortable environment. Besides you also have a wood-burning stove to your disposal. A small TV and broadband connection is available. There is level access throughout the cottage and the shower is a level access wet-room. The cottage has a veranda to the south and west, where you can enjoy the sun and hear the sounds of the river and the birds. It's set in a natural attractive garden with a young orchard and an organic plot, and has access to the river bank. Shorter stays than a week are also possible and a 5% discount is offered to anyone arriving on foot or by bicycle.
Ten minutes by car and you are at Strangford Lough, a big lake that is connected to the Irish Sea. Because of the tides a special flora and fauna has developed. Here is also the world's first commercial tidal stream power station, Sea-Gen. Sailing and kayak hire is possible and you can book boat tours to watch the seals. The highest mountains of Northern Ireland, The Mourne Mountains, are a 30 minutes drive away. 2 Miles from Crossgar village with pubs and restaurants.
