Gwalia Farm B&B

Location and atmosphere

Gwalia is a traditional small farm of about 5 acres, set in the peaceful hills of Mid Wales. On the farm there are goats, sheep, and chickens and a large organic vegetable garden. Harry and Liv established a nature area with a small lake in 1984, and there is now an abundance of pond life and native trees. The fuel for heating, cooking and hot water is from locally managed woodland. They are almost self-sufficient in milk, eggs, vegetables, meat and fruit, as well as compost and hay. And they have their own well for fresh water.

Facillities

There are two rooms for bed and breakfast. The sitting room has a log fire. There is also a self-contained caravan for holidays with hot shower and modern biological toilet. The camping site is extensive and situated in a wild area near the lake. Campfires are permitted. The owner can cook you vegetarian/vegan meals. You can lend a canoe to paddle on the lake or go for a dive in the water.

Surroundings and activities

Gwalia has beautiful views of the southern part of the Snowdonia National Park. This is an excellent area for walking, bird-watching (incl. red kites, buzzards, nightjars, herons, geese), nature and stargazing (the nights are dark!). Nearby are several wildlife reserves and the Centre for Alternative Technology. The town of Machynlleth, a stronghold of the Welsh language, has a weekly market dating from the 13th century. The Black Mountains are the easternmost of the three groups of hills that are covered by the Brecon Beacons National Park. Antiquities include Llanthony Priory, Tretower castle and court, the Iron Age hill fort Crug Hywel, and Castell Dinas, an 11th- to 13th-century castle.
