Quinta Cerca dos Sobreiros
Farm and surroundings
Quinta Cerca dos Sobreiros is a characteristic Alejento farm: the low white buildings are set in a terrain dominated by cork oaks and olive trees. The farm is situated in the little valley of a brook that dries to a trickle in the hot summer months. The area borders directly on Spain, and is one of the most deserted but beautiful regions of Alejento. Until the 1960s, the major source of income in this region was mining. When the mines closed, most people left the area. At present, there is a growing interest in restoring the dilapidated buildings and organizing activities that will keep the local population from migrating. Inka, António and their daughter are not only revitalizing their farm but are also involved in various other activities. António deals in Oriental arts and crafts and Inka is a great vegetarian cook who organizes summer camps for children. There is one canoe for hire.
The campsite has room for 6 tents and 2 caravans. The surrounding area is ideal for riding, cycling and swimming (in the river and lakes). The region has various interesting sights to see, such as Guadiana nature park, an archaeological park, a Moorish castle and an archaeological museum.
