Natuurkampeerterrein De Meenthe
Nature camping De Meenthe is located in the Friese Wouden near the border with the province of Drenthe, in a beautiful landscape with parcels of land surrounded by hedgerows. The site is situated in the woods of the Meenthebos, around a pond which used to be a swimming pool.
The site offers lots of space for 40 tents, caravans and campers. Most pitches are supplied with electricity. Fridges, a washing machine, a dryer and telephone are available. For hikers there are pitches on a separate (part of) ground. The sanitary facilities are in the renovated changing cubicles of the old swimming pool. For children there is playground equipment, a sandbox and a field for playing volleyball. In the pond you can fish and sail. Because the Meenthe is a nature campsite a special camping card is required, which you can buy at the accommodation.
The river the Linde meanders through the green landscapes of Stellingwerf, which is in walking distance. The Drents-Friese Wold, a National Park since 2000, stretches out from Noordwolde (province of Groningen) to as far as Diever into the province Drenthe, and Appelscha in Friesland. In this National Park there are many walking and cycling routes. The marshes of the Rottige Meenthe, the Weerribben and the Wieden are within biking distance. Here you find rich marshy woods with many special birds and plants. De Meenthe rents out bikes. You can walk over wood covered paths (of ‘sticks’) or you can penetrate the Weerribben with a canoe or ‘whisper’ boat (noiseless electrical boat). For children there is the Speelstad Oranje, the largest indoor playground and amusement park for children of Europe. Or you can visit the prison of Veenhuizen, where you can see what it is like to live in a prison nowadays and how it was in the past.
